Request Disposal

When inventory is expired, unsellable, or simply no longer worth the cost of storage, disposal lets you instruct the warehouse to discard those units. This is a permanent action, so verify your quantities before submitting.

There are two separate disposal actions, and they behave differently. Pick the right one for what you are disposing of.

DisposalRegular inventory that is not marked as damaged. You type the quantity to dispose on each row.
Dispose DamagedUnits the warehouse has already recorded as damaged.Filled in for you and read-only -- the request covers every eligible damaged unit on the selected rows.

Disposing Regular Inventory

Follow these steps to submit a disposal request from the Inventory page:

  1. Select the rows to dispose. Use the checkboxes on the inventory table to select the items you want discarded. Take care to select only the rows that truly need to go.

  2. Open Request Actions and choose Disposal. The modal opens with the heading Request Disposal and the note "We'll remove the selected units from your inventory."

  3. Set disposal quantities carefully. For each selected row, enter the number of units in the Quantity To Dispose column. This is the most critical step. Double-check every quantity before proceeding -- once the warehouse discards the items, they cannot be recovered.

  4. Add notes and context. Explain why the items are being disposed of, for example that they are past their expiration date or have been recalled. Clear context helps the warehouse handle the disposal appropriately and keeps your records accurate.

  5. Submit the request.

Disposing Damaged Units

When the warehouse receives or handles your inventory and finds units damaged, it records those against the order. Getting rid of them uses a different action.

  1. Select the rows containing the damaged units.

  2. Open Request Actions and choose Dispose Damaged. The modal opens with the heading Request Damaged Disposal and the note "We'll dispose of all eligible damaged units on the selected orders."

  3. Review the prefilled quantities. You cannot edit them. Each row is prefilled with its total eligible damaged quantity, and the request disposes of all of it. A damage record is eligible when it is still unresolved or pending, and is not already attached to a shipment.

  4. Add notes if there is anything the warehouse should know.

  5. Submit the request.

Because quantities are not editable, the way to control what gets disposed of is your row selection. If you only want some damaged units gone, that is not something this action can express -- raise it through Tickets instead.

When to Request Disposal

Disposal is appropriate in several situations, including:

  • Damaged goods. Items damaged in transit or handling that are unsellable or unsafe to ship. If the warehouse has already logged the damage, use Dispose Damaged rather than ordinary disposal.
  • Expired products. Consumable items that have passed their expiration date and can no longer be sold.
  • Recalled products. Items recalled by the manufacturer that cannot legally be sold or shipped.
  • Cost-of-storage decisions. Slow-moving inventory where ongoing storage fees outweigh the potential revenue from eventual sale.
  • Defective returns. Customer returns that have been inspected and determined to be unsellable.

Important Warnings

Disposal is not reversible. Once the warehouse processes the request and discards the units, those items are gone. Verify that you are disposing of the correct items and quantities before submitting.

Review quantities line by line. On a regular disposal it is easy to type the wrong number when working quickly. Go through each row and confirm the count matches your intent.

Check your selection on a damaged disposal. Since quantities are prefilled and cover everything eligible, the row selection is the only thing standing between you and disposing more than you meant to.

Consider alternatives first. Could the items be sold at a discount, returned to the supplier, or donated? Disposal should be a last resort.

Document your reasoning. Use the notes field to explain why the items are being disposed of. This creates a record that is helpful for accounting, insurance claims, or future reference.

Tracking Your Request

After submitting, your disposal request appears on the Requested Disposals page, where you can monitor its progress and confirm when the warehouse has completed it. That gives you a clear audit trail for all disposed inventory.
